Solid waste refers to any unwanted, discarded, or abandoned non-liquid materials, including household garbage, industrial refuse, and commercial waste. It comprises varied waste types—biodegradable, recyclable, inert, and hazardous materials—that pose significant environmental contamination and health risks if not managed properly.

Solid waste management is a significant environmental and public health challenge in India. The country generates approximately 62 million tonnes of waste annually, with only 43 million tonnes collected and 12 million tonnes treated. The remaining waste often ends up in landfills, causing pollution and health risks.

Key Issues:

- Inadequate Waste Collection: Only 70% of waste is collected, and less than 30% is segregated or processed scientifically.

- Poor Segregation: Lack of segregation at source increases contamination and processing costs.

- Landfill Overuse: Most waste ends up in poorly managed landfills, causing environmental hazards.

Government Initiatives:

- Swachh Bharat Mission: Aims to improve waste management systems and promote source segregation.

- Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 and 2026: Emphasize segregation, decentralized processing, and waste-to-resource approaches.

GDC' NSS unit,is quite active, with students participating in various community service activities like cleanliness drives, literacy programs, health camps, and awareness campaigns on social issues. For instance, the NSS unit at Shri Pandit Prem Nath Dogra Govt. Degree College,  has around 103 volunteers who engage in activities like tree plantation, eye check-up camps, and blood donation drives.

Some of the notable activities of GDC' NSS unit include:

- Community Development: Organizing cleanliness drives and health camps

- Awareness Campaigns: Conducting rallies and workshops on social issues like pollution and voter awareness

- Disaster Relief: Assisting in flood, earthquake, and pandemic relief efforts

- Leadership Development: Enhancing teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills among students

Conclusion: Towards a Zero-Waste Future

Solid Waste Management is a critical pillar of environmental sustainability and public health. As urban and rural areas in districts like Alluri Sitharama Raju continue to develop, the shift from traditional "dumping" to a Circular Economy model is essential to prevent soil degradation and groundwater contamination.

            The active participation of students and the wholehearted encouragement from both teaching and non-teaching staff made the event lively and meaningful. The guidance of our Principal Dr. M. Vijaya Bharathi played an important role in the successful conduct of the program.
